Wheel identification

Have a part you can't identify? Did your parts get mixed up in the shop? Curious if that chunk of metal is a part you should keep? Not sure what kind of windmill or tower you have? Post photos of the mystery object here for the community to help identify.

Wheel identification

Post by TdcJD »

Just picked up this wheel, but no idea on the manufacturer. It's an 8ft wheel. Takes 5 sections to make the full wheel. Came with 2 extra sections as well. All the sections are identical to this one

Its a Samson wheel. Having a clip on each side of the blade where the blades are attached to the rim is a dead giveaway that its Samson. Also 5 sections for an 8 foot size wheel. The Samson was made by the Stover Manufacturing And Engine Company in Freeport, Illinois.

Will find these wheels on both the Samson open double-geared windmill, as well as the later Samson Oil-Rites.

Have seen at least two Stover steel wheel Ideals with this type of wheel. Whether this is a case of somebody replacing a wind wrecked wheel on an Ideal with the later type of wheel, or whether a few Ideals in the last days of the Ideal were fitted with this type of wheel at the factory, I will leave to the experts to decide.
